Sri Lanka is facing a highly contagious new Lambda strain, according to the Health Ministry.
COVID-19 people with the new Lambda form could be detected in the country at any time, according to the Health Ministry.
However, according to Dr. Hemantha Herath, Deputy Director-General of Health Services, Sri Lanka has not yet documented any cases of Lambda variant.
"It should be highlighted that such cases could be identified in Sri Lanka at any time, and health officials are on high alert," Dr. Herath said.
He went on to clarify that there are no special steps that need to be taken to contain the Lambda variant, only careful adherence to health rules and procedures.“We're also on the lookout for returnees and visitors to Sri Lanka who could bring the virus with them. Dr. Herath stated that "we have taken all steps to prevent the virus from entering the country."
Meanwhile, Dr. Padma Gunaratne, President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, stated that the most hazardous virus at the moment is Delta rather than Lambda.
“Whether it's Delta or Lambda, the virus spreads in the same way. We can safeguard ourselves against any COVID-19 variation by strictly adhering to health rules,” she noted.
