Jayasuriya will take over as coach of a low-key Australian club.
Sanath Jayasuriya, a former Sri Lanka captain and chief selector, was named head coach of a small-time club in Australia on Friday, joining two fellow countrymen at the ambitious outfit.
The 110-Test veteran will lead Mulgrave Cricket Club in Victoria's Eastern Cricket Association for the 2021/22 season, according to the club.
On Facebook, the club said, "We are thrilled to have Sanath at the club to coach and work with our players, providing a fantastic wealth of experience for our seniors and juniors."
Jayasuriya, 51, will compete with fellow Sri Lankans Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga, who had previously committed to the team.
Dilshan, who played with Jayasuriya in a Sri Lanka Legends side earlier this year, was instrumental in securing his services, according to Mulgrave president Malin Pullenayegam.
He told the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper, "We've been having a chat with him for a while through obviously Dilshan as a contact."
"During the Legends series, they reconnected and began a conversation.
"Dilshan opened the door for us there," he continued, "and it was a tremendous opportunity that was provided to us." "All we had to do was work on it and come to an agreement, which we did."
Jayasuriya played 586 times for Sri Lanka in all three formats of the game, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. He last competed in an international tournament in 2011. (AFP)
