Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, the UN resident coordinator in Sri Lanka, noted that the right to peaceful assembly includes the right to organise peaceful demonstrations, and that any limits imposed as part of the pandemic response should not go beyond the necessary protection of public health.

In a tweet, she stated that the right to assemble aids in the enjoyment of other rights such as freedom of expression and the ability to influence public policy.
