Travel restrictions may have to be extended: SLMA

Dr. Padma Gunaratne, President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), stated today that existing travel restrictions may have to be extended further if they are not adequately enforced.

She told the media that it was perplexing if the present limits are appropriately maintained, given the prevalence of public movement in society.

“This isn't something we can take for granted. “The travel limit should be strengthened and effectively monitored to prevent excessive movements,” she said.

“If the current limits are repealed, COVID-19 cases could suddenly increase in large numbers,” she warned. Meanwhile, Dr. Gunaratne stated that Sri Lanka is not yet out of the woods, since the threat is still present.

“We can't declare the country is safe in a situation when 2000 or more positive cases are reported daily,” she said.

“From now on, we must all do everything we can to put a stop to the plague in the country,” she stated.
