The Ministry of Health clarifies the reason for the delay in reporting COVID-19 deaths.
The Health Ministry today explained why COVID-19 deaths that occurred several days, if not weeks, ago are tallied as a single day total.
Dr. Hemantha Herath, the Deputy Director General of Health Services, said today at a press conference that some deaths could take a long time to confirm.
“It should be noted that this is not a delay. COVID-19 deaths must be investigated and confirmed, according to guidelines issued by the Director General of Health Services. The news about the deaths are released after following the relevant guidelines. For that, it may take time,” Dr. Herath stressed.
"This is not due to the Health Authorities' ineptitude; rather, it is due to the proper protocol that they must follow when issuing the final count," he explained.
As a result, Dr. Herath stated that no attempt was made to conceal or exaggerate the number of COVID-19 deaths.
"When it comes to COVID-19-related concerns, the health professionals are providing a true service," he continued.
According to a statement released by the Government Information Department in response to the 67 deaths recorded on June 10, 19 fatalities were recorded between May 17 and May 31, while 48 deaths were reported between June 1 and June 8(Sheain Fernandopulle)
