Shani Abeysekara further remanded till June 30
Despite the fact that the Colombo Appeal Court ordered former CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekera and another suspect to be released on bail, the Gampaha. Because the bail terms relating to the release had not yet been presented to the Gampaha Magistrate until last evening, Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne ordered them to be imprisoned until June 30.
In the case of former Senior DIG Vass Gunawardene, SSP Abeysekara and senior Embilipitiya police SI Sugath Mohana Mendis had been remanded on suspicion of forging evidence.
The retired SI Nawaratne Prematilleka was the other suspect remanded.
The suspects were not brought to court because of the Corona Pandemic, according to the jail authorities.
Attorney at Law Srinath Seneviratne, representing former SI Navaratne Prematilleka, said his client had been wrongfully imprisoned for 280 days because the Colombo Crime Division had failed to complete the recording of his statement.
The Judge ordered the Colombo Crime Division to record the suspect's statement on three days over the following two weeks and report back on June 30.
The state's submissions were made by IP Nishantha and PC 92700 Samira.
