COVID-19 supplies are airlifted from the United States to Sri Lanka
The United States Government, through the United States Department of State, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has transported essential medical supplies to the Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in order to save lives, prevent the spread of COVID-19, and fulfill the region's urgent health requirements.
This new flight comes after the United States sent three batches of COVID-19 emergency supplies. In a news statement, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the arrival of seven emergency air supplies to India to aid in the containment of the COVID-19 epidemic.
This aid comprises 880,000 pieces of critical personal protective equipment and 1,200 pulse oximeters for frontline healthcare workers and others who are most affected by the current outbreak in Sri Lanka. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US and Sri Lanka have worked closely together to respond, and USAID's assistance has benefited millions of people across the country, providing life-saving treatments, strengthening clinical care, and mobilizing critical supplies to bolster the response. The United States has already contributed $11.3 million to Sri Lanka's COVID-19 response and recovery efforts, including a donation of 200 ventilators to help severely injured patients.
This airlift shows the US government's coordinated approach to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most swiftly. The California Office of Emergency Services generously contributed goods, USAID obtained personal protective equipment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of State purchased the transport aircraft.
Additional shipments for South Asia are being coordinated by USAID in the coming weeks.
USAID is also collaborating with the private sector to address the region's immediate health needs. To fulfill the crucial requirements arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, USAID will draw on its experience working with a variety of private sector partners, ranging from manufacturers to investors, multinational corporations to small and medium-sized businesses.
